Building a Chicken Coop

Earthsense

So, you’ve done some research, you’ve checked into chicken ordinances in your area, and you’re ready to get started.  One of the first steps toward keeping chickens is building a coop.  First, you’ll need to decide what kind of coop you want to build and what your budget might be.

Coops can be simple lean-to structures made from materials you may already have, poultry Taj Mahals built from expensive plans or even pieces of furniture re-purposed to house chickens!  You can build a coop where chickens will live all the time, or build a smaller structure with a fenced area where they can run.  Keep in mind that you’ll want about eighteen square feet of space inside the coop to house three to five laying hens which will yield about 12 fresh eggs per week!
