Fire Safety 1: Home Fires

Each year in the United States more than two thousand five hundred people die and twelve thousand six hundred people are injured in home fires.  And estimated annual property loss due to home fires is seven point three billion dollars!

But the important thing to remember here is that home fires are preventable.  The first step is to be informed.  As you know fires are hot and they spread quickly, but smoke and heat can be just as deadly as the flames.  It only takes a few minutes for your home to fill with thick dark smoke.  In the case of a fire, there is no time to collect valuables or make phone calls; you should get out of the house as quickly as possible.  Tomorrow, we’ll discuss ways that you can prevent fire and things you can do to prepare your family in the event of a home fire.
