Using safe practices to prevent home fires is a good start, but you need to have an emergency plan in case of a fire and every family member should be well familiar with that plan. Sit down with your family to create and then practice a fire escape plan.
Start by finding two ways out of each room in your house and try feeling your way out with your eyes closed to simulate a smoke filled home. If you have a second story, it’s a good idea to have a collapsible ladder easily accessible, and make sure your windows are in working order with screens that can be removed easily and bars that can opened quickly. It’s important to practice a fire drill with your family twice a year and teach young children not to hide from firefighters!
