We’ve been talking about fire safety this week and while you may have a fire escape plan, there are some things you should keep in mind in the event of a fire. When your smoke alarm sounds, get out fast! You may have only a matter of minutes to make your escape.
Stay low to the floor…heavy smoke and fumes will collect at ceiling level first. Before you open a door, feel the doorknob for heat and avoid hot doors or paths that are heavy with smoke. If you can’t get to someone in need of assistance get out and call 9-1-1 immediately. If there is a pet in the house, tell fire fighters once they arrive. If you cannot escape, get into a safe room and close the door, cover vents and door cracks with cloth or tape to keep smoke out and then call 9-1-1 and try to signal for help. Try to stay calm and be smart!
