Getting Rid of Armadillos

Hello Gardeners, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow! Although armadillos are in residence of most of South Carolina and will always be a problem in some gardens, you can try to get relief by capturing one that is plaguing you by unsightly and damaging digging. A large, heavy-duty manufactured trap placed near a fence line or where you see activity should have six-foot long or so wings of 1x4 or 1 x6 inch boards fanning out from the entrance to the trap. Putting loose soil over the cage bottom seems to help. Once you capture an armadillo, you are presented with another dilemma as it is illegal to take them to another location and release them.  If you cannot tolerate your armadillo problems, perhaps  your best option is to contact a professional nuisance wildlife specialist. They have professional  equipment to capture and euthanize the animals.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
