Heart Health- Dining Out

Earthsense

Going out to eat can be a nice treat, but don’t let your venue de-rail your heart healthy diet plans!  You can maintain your healthy diet at restaurants as long as you keep these tips in mind.  Avoid dishes that are described as being fried, scalloped, buttered, or stuffed as these tend to denote higher caloric values.

Instead opt for steamed, broiled, baked, or grilled.  If you’re not sure about dish, ask your server how it’s prepared.  Choose fish, chicken, or lean cuts of meat and avoid before-meal extras like cocktails, appetizers, and bread baskets where hidden calories lurk.  When ordering your food, you can be picky!  Ask for sauces, dressing, and even butter to be served on the side so you control the portion size.  Ask if smaller meal portions are available, or if you can share with your dinner partner.  And remember, you do not have to be a member of the clean plate club!  Stop when your hunger has been satisfied.
