"K" is for Kershaw, Joseph Brevard [1822-1894]. Soldier, Jurist. Kershaw, a native of Camden, was a member of the General Assembly and of the Secession Convention. In April 1861 he was a colonel of the Second South Carolina Regiment which played an active role in the Confederate victory at First Manassas. The next year he was promoted to brigadier general and given command of the brigade that saw action at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. In 1864 he was promoted to major general and commanded the First Division of the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia that saw action in every major battle in the eastern theater—including the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, siege of Petersburg, and final defense of Richmond. After the war, Joseph Brevard Kershaw returned to his law practice and was for many years a circuit judge.
