Hello Gardeners, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. McLeod Farms in McBee is well-known for its peaches. Located on deep sands, this farm was an early pioneer in drip irrigation, which dramatically reduced water usage compared to traditional overhead watering. They continue as leaders in the agricultural community, always embracing new and improved practices.
Recently, this innovative family was honored by many friends who sponsored a party celebrating 100 years of farming for the McLeods. Speaker after speaker reflected on the generosity of this family and their willingness to give back to their community and their state, a characteristic underscored by an announcement patriarch Kemp McLeod made -- a donation of $50,000 to Clemson for a scholarship for a deserving horticulture student. Rather than promoting the McLeod legacy, this gracious family named the scholarship in honor of my friend and fellow extension agent, Tony Melton.
