More Fuel Efficiency Tips

Earthsense

We’ve been talking all week about ways to improve your fuel economy when walking or biking isn’t feasible and there are a number of things that you can do to decrease emissions while increasing your milesper gallon.  For example, try not to carry more in your car than is necessary, especially when it comes to heavy items.

According to the US Department of Energy, an extra 100 pounds in the trunk can reduce a typical car’s fuel economy by 1 to 2 per cent.  When taking a trip, a roof rack can give you some extra room for cargo and odd sized items, but a loaded roof rack can reduce fuel economy by as much as 5 per cent.  Reduce aerodynamic drag and improve fuel efficiency by putting items in your trunk whenever possible.  Another way to improve aerodynamics is to keep your car clean and waxed.
