Joseph H. McGee and Madeleine McGee, Charleston 2012

This edition of Narrative features an interview from StoryCorps, an oral history project where friends and loved ones interview each other. When StoryCorps visited Charleston in 2012, Madeleine McGee interviewed her father, Joseph H. McGee. In honor of Father's Day, South Carolina Public Radio's Haley Kellner presents a selection of this father-daughter interview.
Throughout his 88 years, Joseph McGee has served the city of Charleston in many ways, including more than five decades as a lawyer and a member of the state legislature and city council. In the 1970s he assisted with the Charleston Tri-Centennial, and for many years he has contributed to the Historic Charleston Foundation and the South Carolina Bar Association. Today he has retired to the beach near his family where he spends his days reading and gardening. His years of public service served as a strong example to his daughter, Madeleine McGee, who is the president of Together SC, an organization dedicated to uniting South Carolina’s nonprofit community.
