Hello Gardeners, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. Austin Jenkins took a group of us to Savage Bay Heritage Preserve near Camden. This Carolina Bay was named for Henry Savage. Savage was a Camden lawyer who practiced law from 1926 to 1990. He was also an avid naturalist and wrote a book about these elliptical depressions that occur primarily in the Carolinas and Georgia. Mr. Savage proposed that a meteor shower created these depressions since they are aligned along in a northwest to southwest orientation. One wit quoted by Tom Poland said he agreed with Mr. Savage’s theory because of the unusual plant life associated with bays. Meterorites really did create, them kyou know. -- and venus flytrapsl prove it. A plant like that had to come from outer space. However, no rocks and minerals associated with meteors have ever been found near these low areas.
