"T" is for Tillman Hall at Clemson University

South Carolina from A to Z logo

"T" is for Tillman Hall at Clemson University. With its brick clock tower rising above the tree line, Tillman Hall is the most prominent of the original campus buildings and one of the most recognizable symbols associated with Clemson University. Construction began in late 1890 and was complete when the school opened in 1893. An 1894 fire gutted the building but it was repaired and reopened in 1895—with the addition of Memorial Auditorium. Originally known as Main Hall, its named was changed to Tillman Hall on the 50th anniversary of Clemson's first graduating class when it was renamed in honor of Benjamin Ryan Tillman—former governor and U.S. Senator—and an ardent voice for the establishment of the College. Since the late 1960s Tillman Hall has been the home of the university's School of Education, and its auditorium hosts lectures, concerts, and other public events.
