Winter Composting

Earthsense

Generally, we compost during the warmer months of the year, but maybe you started composting last summer and you’re wondering how to care for your compost material through the cold months.

You can leave the material dormant through the winter and start an indoor composting bin that you can add back into the outdoor pile when the weather warms up.  Since we live in a region that doesn’t get a lot of snow, you should be able to keep adding compost material as usual, but to help them decompose faster in cooler temperatures, try breaking up the leaves, vegetable peelings, and egg shells into smaller bits.  Also, try layering leaves or dry material over fresh moist substances to help protect your compost from the weather. And don’t forget you can add any organic compound like yard clippings, pet fur, and even toenail clippings, if you have the stomach for it!
