Extension Agent Honored for His Post-Flood Work

Making It Grow! Minute logo

Hello Gardeners, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. One of many Extension agent heroes during the aftermath of the 1000 year flood was Zachary Snipes. The owner of Rest Park Farm/Pickney’s Produce in Beaufort County saw his vegetable crop wiped out after the October rains. Urbie West said he was so despondent that he wanted to quit farming all together.

But Regional Extension vegetable specialist Zach Snipes wouldn’t hear of it. He worked with Mr. West to get all the information needed to apply for the Farm Aid Relief Bill funded by the South Carolina State Legislature. Mr. West says that if Zach hadn’t encouraged him, “the state would have been short another farm.” Zach was presented with the 2016 Sustainable Agriculture Agent of the Year award for his with West and other growers. Extension Director Thomas Dobbins said that Zach is a servant leader who takes the university to the people.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
